When does advising begin? Please visit the Registrar’s Office calendars for registration dates and drop/add deadlines. Check for available appointments in SAGE shortly after the semester begins. (Review how to find your advisor and make an appointment in SAGE.) How can I graduate in four years? Take a look at this template four-year plan. But please note that this “typical” schedule is only an example. Each student may have a unique path to graduation. Working with your advisor is critical to guiding you to graduation. Do I really need four science courses? Yes, the Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology requires four science courses. You need two life sciences with labs, one physical science with a lab, and one additional physical science course that doesn’t require a lab. Your advisor will recommend specific science courses for you based on things like your minor or double major or pre-health program. What is the Neuroscience area of emphasis? The Psychology major with a Neuroscience area of emphasis combines a strong foundation in basic life sciences with more specialized coursework in psychology and biology to examine cognitive, behavioral, and brain functions. Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary area of research that focuses on the entire nervous system and involves various aspects of neurobiology, cognitive psychology, and neurophysiology. I’m pursuing the Neuroscience area of emphasis. Which sciences do I need for that? We typically recommend BIOL 1107+lab, BIOL 1108+lab, CHEM 1211+lab, and CHEM 1212+lab because they might be required for graduate school programs. In addition, they are prerequisites for most other courses required for the area of emphasis. Be sure to check with your advisor for recommendations tailored to your interests. (Also check admissions requirements for the institutions you plan to apply to for graduate school.) Please review this list of courses for Neuroscience and let your advisor know if you have any questions. What are upper-division electives and how many do I need? Every UGA student must earn at least 39 hours of upper-division credits (numbered 3000 or above) to graduate. The B.S. in Psychology provides 22 hours of upper-division credit. Students should work with their advisor to plan for the additional 17 upper-division hours needed to reach 39. Students are strongly encouraged to consider a minor or certificate program. Please note that pre-health programs will not provide the 17 additional upper-division hours because most pre-health classes are lower-division. Be sure to tell your advisor if you are interested in a minor, certificate, or pre-health program. What do I do if I need to get into a course that is full? Check Athena frequently to see if space in the class becomes available. If there is a waitlist for the class then put yourself on it. You will receive an email if a seat opens up for you and you should register right away. All waitlists are dropped three business days before the first day of classes (for exact dates see the Pertinent Dates calendar) and classes are then available in Athena on a first-come, first-served basis. You can check for availability in the class right up through the end of the first week of classes (drop/add). Do CBIO 2200/2200L or 2210/2210L count in the Psychology major? While these classes are common prerequisites for some pre-health programs (such as pre-PA), they do not count toward the sciences required for the Psychology major. How do I request prerequisite overrides and PODs for Psychology classes? Complete the PSYC Course Override Request. Can my advisor give me overrides or PODs for other courses? No. The Psychology Advising Office can only provide overrides or PODs for PSYC courses. Each department manages its own PODs, so students must contact the individual department that manages the course. Please contact the lead advisor in the department for which you are seeking the override. Can I take a research class? Learn all the details about how to participate in Psychology research here. Students who have accepted a research assistant position in a lab have two opportunities to earn academic credit hours: the department’s PSYC 4800 or a CURO Research/Thesis Courses (e.g. PSYC 4960R, 4970R, 4980R, 4990R). PSYC 3980 and 3990 are prerequisites for all these courses, and all require Permission of Department. Students should discuss which course option is appropriate with a faculty mentor or research lab leadership. Can I earn credit for an internship through the Psychology Dept.? No, the Psychology Dept. does not offer internships or give course credit for internships. Can I take more than one PSYC 3100 course for credit? You can take up to 9 credit hours in special topics courses, such as PSYC 3100 and PSYC 5100. Can I take more than one PSYC 5100 course for credit? You can take up to 9 credit hours in special topics courses, such as PSYC 3100 and PSYC 5100. Can I take more than one PSYC 4800 in the same semester? No, you can only enroll in one section of 4800 per semester for 1-3 credit hours. A limit of 9 credit hours in PSYC 4800 can be applied towards your degree. Can I receive credit for PSYC 1101 from my score on the CLEP Psychology Test? No. UGA does not accept CLEP credit. Can I minor in Psychology? UGA does not offer a minor in Psychology. Please check out the UGA Bulletin for a list of potential minors and options for certificates.
