Racial Trauma Guide

UGA COVID 19 Guide

Racism and hate do not belong in our Society, our University, and not in our Department of Psychology. In these times of example after example of intolerable treatment of persons of color, the Faculty, Staff, and Students of the Department of Psychology publicly and vehemently denounce the hate and violence that has been, and continues to be, perpetrated on our students, colleagues, and community because of race, gender, sexuality, and other marginalized identities. We promise to do all things within our scope and power to reduce and eliminate these injustices and to take direct actions to further the inclusive development of our local and broader University community to make sure that all are safe, supported, and protected from such objectionable treatment. This is not a political statement. This is a moral and human statement.

Over the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic, and especially in recent days and weeks, we have been horrified to see a rise in racially motivated hate crimes involving physical violence and harassment, targeting people of Asian descent in the U.S. The UGA Psychology Department stands in solidarity with the Asian American community against these attacks that damage our entire society, but also have a particularly detrimental impact on the Asian American community.

Advancing racial equity and economic inclusion for people of all races and ethnicities is critical to guaranteeing the safety and security of everyone. We encourage every member of our community to take a stand against the structures that perpetuate and fuel discrimination and assaults on Asian American and Pacific Islander persons and we will work towards those ends as a Department.
