Franklin alumna Becky Winkler (AB `98) spoke to the Department of Psychology’s course, PSYC 3030: Preparing for a Career in Psychology. Winkler, a 1998 University of Georgia graduate with degrees in psychology, women’s studies and Chinese, has worked in various fields ranging from research to private equity. Winkler now leads Department 732c, a consulting firm that she founded that specializes in the human capital space - bringing new leaders on board, developing existing talent and evaluating potential acquisitions.

After graduating from UGA, Winkler earned her MA and PhD from DePaul University in Industrial-Organizational Psychology where she graduated with her PhD at the age of 26.

“When someone tells me I can’t do something I do my best to make sure that I can prove them wrong,” said Winkler. “I think being underestimated is one of my greatest strengths. When I was going for my PhD I wrote a 50-page paper in three days.”

Winkler emphasizes that everyone has their own adventure and narrative for their lives. Winkler learned this through her father who was a Jamaican immigrant. “The worst thing that someone can ask you is what you want to be when you get older,” said Winkler. “Asking that implies that you only want to do one thing and that you can only do one thing.

Winkler shared her advice with students for their future life and careers including the importance of networking, benefits of failing and finding your true passions.

“Failure is a much better teacher than success,” said Winkler. “Networking and informational interviews are important. Do not be shy, go and meet people. Know what you want and ask for it – be specific. Have fearlessness, vulnerability and resilience.”

“Your happiness will be a blend of your vocational and avocational interests,” said Winkler.

Winkler closed with sharing her passion of accessibility to higher education for all. She provides scholarships to ensure that students can attend universities and have access to higher ed learning opportunities. “I do lots of scholarships. I believe your destination should not be determined by your zip code,” said Winkler. “I have scholarships at my alma maters for my mother and father. I am all about human potential, and bringing everyone up.”

Winkler currently resides in Charlotte where she leads Department 732c. An outstanding example of the successful psychology alumni at the Franklin College, she truly embodies the Franklin Spark – ambitious, curious, creative and an innovative leader.
