Image: Dr. Louise McBee, a psychologist and former University of Georgia administrator and state legislator from Athens, died Tuesday March 2nd, 2021 at 96. Dr. McBee served in several positions at UGA, including dean of women, vice president for academic affairs, and associate professor of psychology and associate professor of higher education. She is the namesake for the Louise McBee Award, given each year to a female grad student in clinical, school, and counseling psychology at UGA, and sponsored by the Athens Area Psychological Association. Dr. McBee dedicated her life to service, earning her many honors, such as Elridge McMillan Lifetime Achievement Award, the Governor’s Award in the Humanities, Outstanding Legislator Award from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, Georgia General Assembly Women’s Legislative Caucus Leadership Award, the Georgia Hospital Association Legislative Leadership Award, Thomas Murphy Good Heart Legislator’s Award; the Georgia Municipal Association Legislative Service Award, the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia Legislative Award, and the Legislator of the Year by the Northeast Georgia Aging Services Advisory Council, among many other awards. Dr. McBee once said ““We are born obligated to pour back into the stream that nourished us—to replenish it for others. To the extent that we do that, we have lived a good and full life.”
